GARAGE SALE TIPS
1. Preparation & Pricing
The success of your sale is decided before the first customer arrives.
- Group by Category: Treat your lawn like a department store. Keep kitchenware together, toys in one area, and tools in another.
- The 10% Rule: Generally, price items at 10% to 30% of their original retail value. If you bought a blender for $50, list it for $5–$15 depending on condition.
- Price Everything: People hate asking “How much is this?” Use neon stickers or masking tape. If you have a bin of small items, a sign saying “All items in this box: $1” works wonders.
- Clean it up: A quick wipe-down can be the difference between a $2 sale and a $10 sale.
2. Advertising & Timing
If they don’t know you’re there, they won’t come.
- Signage is King: Use large, high-contrast posters (neon yellow or pink with thick black marker). Include your address and a bold arrow. Place them at the nearest major intersections.
- Go Digital: Post on Facebook Marketplace, Instagram, Eventbrite at least 2–3 days in advance.
- The “Golden Hours”: Most “pickers” and serious buyers out by 9:00 AM. Start early to catch the morning rush.
3. Logistics & Set-up
- The Power of Change: Go to the bank the day before. You’ll need at least:
- $20 in $1 coins
- $50 in $5 bills
- A roll of quarters
- Power Access: Have an extension cord or batteries handy so people can test electronics. If they can’t see it work, they won’t buy it.
- Bags and Boxes: Save your grocery bags and small boxes. Providing a way for people to carry their haul encourages them to buy more.
- Music & Vibe: Play some upbeat, low-volume music. It prevents that awkward silence when only one person is browsing.
4. Strategic Deal Making
- Be Ready to Haggle: Don’t take low offers personally. If someone offers $3 for a $5 item and it’s noon, take the $3. Your goal is to get rid of stuff, not move it back into your house.
- The “Fill a Bag” Special: During the final two hours, offer a deal where customers can fill a grocery bag for $5 or $10. It’s a great way to clear out the small leftovers.
- Safety First: Keep your “bank” (money) on your person in a fanny pack or apron. Never leave a cash box unattended on a table.
Pro Tip: If an item hasn’t sold by 2:00 PM and you don’t want it back in your house, put it in a “FREE” box by the curb. It’ll vanish in minutes.
